Latest sightings from Chapter Meadows, Worcester

The following birds have been seen on the meadows in the previous few weeks:

Treecreeper, Goldcrest (a pair in a mixed Titmice flock), Kingfisher, Mistlethrush, Green Woodpecker, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Starlings (20+), Pied Wagtails (35+), Sparrowhawk, Cormorants, Chaffinch, Dunnock, Goldfinches, Great Tits, Blue Tits, Long Tailed Tits, Robins, Wrens, Woodpigeons, Blackbirds, Carrion Crows and Magpies.

Other wildlife includes:

Hornets, Wasps feeding on the Ivy flowers, Rabbits

Some of the more unusual/irregular visitors in the past have included Fieldfare, Reed Bunting, Whinchat, Coal Tit and a Marbled White butterfly.

Changes to Volunteer Task List

Please take note of the following changes to the volunteer task list for November. We apologise for any inconvenience.

November

Thursday 4th – Pound Green - This task has been postponed to Wednesday 17th so there will be no task on this date.

Wednesday 17th – Tom Shell Coppice – The task at this location will be postponed to a later date and has been replaced by a task at Pound Green Common. Please see the main list posted below for further information.

The History of the Pump House

The Education Officer (Laura Chapman) is trying to go back in history to get a full picture of the Pump House and surrounding land. If you have any information or pictures/photos that you would be happy to share with the Trust then we would be very grateful.

Updated Volunteer Task List for October and November 2010

This is an updated task list to take account of a change to the task on the 27th October which was due to take place at King George V Playing Fields. This task date will now take place at Elbury Mount Local Nature Reserve. Please see below for more details.

Please contact James Birbeck (Senior Warden) on 07968477817  if you wish to join the Trust on any of these tasks. Please bring appropriate footwear, warm/waterproof clothing and a packed lunch. Drinks and biscuits will be provided.  All tools and other equipment are supplied by the Trust.

October

Wednesday 27th – Scrub clearance for Worcester City Council Wildlife Rangers at Elbury Mount Local Nature Reserve, off Tolladine Road, Worcester (SO 868 558).

November

Wednesday 3rd – We will be working with volunteers from the Kidderminster Viaduct Woodland Project to clear out an old mill pond located beneath the Hoobrook Viaduct and have a general tidy -up of the site which they have worked to make accessible to the public. The site is located near Homebase in Hoobrook  (SO 836 747).

Thursday 4th -  We will be working with Godfrey Jones at Pound Green Common SSSI (SO 754 789) to help manage this heathland site in the heart of the Wyre Forest.

Wednesday 10th – We will be working with Worcester City Council Wildlife Ranger Team at Warndon Wood, Worcester. The work will involve coppicing an area of Hazel, as part of the coppice rotation, to help manage the woodland in a traditional way to benefit wildlife.

Wednesday 17th – A woodland management task at Tom Shell Coppice (access at SO 761 683), Abberley.

Thursday 18th – We will be working with Worcester City Council Wildlife Ranger Team at Warndon Wood, Worcester. The work will involve coppicing an area of Hazel, as part of the coppice rotation, to help manage the woodland in a traditional way to benefit wildlife.

Wednesday 24th – Preparation of a hedge for laying at Offerton Lane (SO 884 575) which is a traffic free lane running parallel to the Worcester-Birmingham canal.
